Thanks for clicking in to Andy Daniels' State Farm Insurance agency in Indianola, Mississippi!

November brings one of my favorite holidays....Thanksgiving! At Andy Daniels' State Farm Insurance, we are thankful for all of the customer who choose our agency to protect what matters to them. We are grateful for the years of allowing us to help you. During the Thanksgiving season, I love the time spent with family and friends apart from the hustle and bustle of December and especially love the scrumptious turkey and dressing and casseroles and desserts. If you like your turkey fried, frying a turkey can result in a deliciously crispy bird, but it’s essential to follow safety guidelines to avoid accidents.

Here are some dos and don'ts for frying turkey:

Dos

  • Do Use a Safe Fryer:

    • Use a turkey fryer specifically designed for outdoor use. Ensure it’s stable and on a flat surface away from flammable materials.

  • Do Thaw the Turkey Completely:

    • Ensure the turkey is completely thawed (not frozen) to prevent dangerous splattering and boiling over.

  • Do Measure Oil:

    • Before heating the oil, place the turkey in the fryer and fill it with water to determine how much oil you need. Remove the turkey and dry it thoroughly before adding oil.

  • Do Use the Right Oil:

    • Use oils with a high smoke point, such as peanut oil or canola oil, to achieve optimal frying results.

  • Do Monitor the Temperature:

    • Heat the oil to the recommended temperature (around 350°F or 175°C) and use a thermometer to monitor it throughout the process.

  • Do Wear Protective Gear:

    • Use long gloves and safety goggles to protect yourself from hot oil splashes.

  • Do Keep a Fire Extinguisher Nearby:

    • Have a Class K fire extinguisher on hand in case of oil fires.

  • Do Fry Outdoors:

    • Always fry turkey outdoors and at least 10-15 feet away from structures, including garages and overhangs.

  • Do Lower the Turkey Slowly:

    • When placing the turkey in the hot oil, lower it slowly to prevent oil from splattering.

  • Do Allow the Oil to Cool:

  • After frying, allow the oil to cool completely before disposing of it or storing it.

Don'ts

  • Don't Overfill the Fryer:

    • Avoid overfilling the fryer with oil; it can overflow when the turkey is added.

  • Don't Fry a Frozen or Partially Frozen Turkey:

    • Never fry a frozen turkey as it can cause dangerous oil splatter and flare-ups.

  • Don't Leave the Fryer Unattended:

    • Always supervise the fryer while it’s in use to prevent accidents.

  • Don't Use the Fryer Indoors:

    • Never use a turkey fryer inside your home, garage, or on a wooden deck.

  • Don't Use Water to Extinguish Oil Fires:

    • If a fire occurs, do not use water; instead, use a fire extinguisher or cover the pot with a lid to smother the flames.

  • Don't Fry Too Many Turkeys at Once:

    • Fry one turkey at a time to ensure even cooking and to manage oil splatter safely.

  • Don't Forget to Let it Rest:

    • After frying, let the turkey rest for about 20-30 minutes before carving to allow juices to redistribute.

By following these dos and don'ts, you can enjoy a safely fried turkey and a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration!
